HOOK, LINE & SINKER! * Today we spotted an immatur

HOOK, LINE & SINKER!

Today we spotted an immature Reddish Egret in distress, pecking at a fishing line and sinker dangling from its wing.
*
I immediately reached out to @seabirdstation to report an animal in distress and seek their guidance.
*
On standby, they waited for further information from us, but based on the situation and previous encounters we’ve had, we felt confident we could safely capture the bird and remove the fishing line without harming the egret. We updated them throughout the process.
*
I asked the beach goers who first observed the bird if they could bring down shears or a knife from their condo. “Oh, and see if you can find a long pool net while you’re up there, too, please!”
*
Working together, we were able to safely capture the bird and remove the line and sinker without causing too much stress on this beautiful animal. At the last second before the release, we also found and dislodged the hook, which was buried under its wing!

In an apparent sign of gratitude, it stuck around for a minute and literally shook it off. So cool!

The buffet was open less than 2 miles offshore between #keybiscayne and #foweylight today.
*
Aboard a 22’ open fisherman, @matirionda and his pals were fortunate to witness this epic #wildlife encounter. At first they thought it may have been marine debris, or an abandoned Cuban raft. But as they approached, they discovered several species of sharks, including a few big Tigers, feasting on a (Sperm?) whale in less than 10’ of water. Wow!!
