Thank you @billbaggsstatepark Rangers Alex and Hugo, and turtle volunteers Rumya and Karen for coming to the rescue. Together we removed a massive bundle of #traprope from the shoreline of #capeflorida state park during a sunrise paddle on a picture perfect day.

Initially, I was only able to cut off about 1/4 of what turned out to be a 300 lbs. death trap. I needed help. After waving down the trusty turtle trackers on their ATV, we radioed the rangers; “We’re going to need shovels and muscle!”

Luckily, I brought my new @gillmarine serrated knife, and Ranger Alex skipped the gym earlier that day!

This adult Yellow crowned Night Heron calls the #mangroves along the #viscaya gardens home. During an early morning site visit for an upcoming #cleanup, we were lucky to witness its highly adapted hunting prowess; quickly catching, disarming, cracking, crunching, and ingesting a feisty crab.

Crabs play important roles within the mangrove #ecosystems. Besides being a food source for #birds, their larvae is a staple for juvenile fish along the coastal waterways.
*
Crabs also dig burrows which aerate the sediment, diminish the effect of extreme temperatures, and serve as water reservoirs within the #livingshoreline.

Today we spotted a seagull scoop a piece of latex during a beach cleanup with @vassarclubsouthflorida. Luckily, it wasn’t a clean getaway.

We like watching birds, especially the variety of resident and migratory #shorebirds that call #keybiscayne home. Thank you @vassarclubsouthflorida for removing 30 lbs. of plastic and marine debris from the #bearcut preserve sanctuary today. Every piece matters.

Yep, that’s a 27” Panasonic Triple Play TV that washed ashore at #crandonpark.

Students, parents and staff from Coconut Grove Elementary School joined forces for a #beachcleanup with FillABag yesterday to kick off Earth Month. The intrepid crew combed through the weedy wrack line and dense dunes, removing 262 lbs. of debris from the fragile Bear Cut Preserve.
*
Besides the TV and a rusted out derelict trash bin, all the usual suspects made an appearance, including ropes, nets, plastic bottles, styrofoam and fishing lines.

A successful #greenturtle rehab and release today at @billbaggsstatepark The veterinarian team from @zoomiami was kind enough to patch her up and share her story before returning her back home on a glorious Spring day.

Ms. Moore and the Key Biscayne K-8 Center middle schoolers showed their love for the environment over two days this week. Together they removed 178 lbs. of litter from the Village streets, sidewalks, parks, bus shelters, parking lots and swales.

This spirited crew of 75 teens and a few hero teachers uncovered some strange finds…as well as a few treasures. Most importantly, none of the litter recovered will end up in the waterways that surround their island paradise. Great job gang. The future is bright!

HOOK, LINE & SINKER!

Today we spotted an immature Reddish Egret in distress, pecking at a fishing line and sinker dangling from its wing.
*
I immediately reached out to @seabirdstation to report an animal in distress and seek their guidance.
*
On standby, they waited for further information from us, but based on the situation and previous encounters we’ve had, we felt confident we could safely capture the bird and remove the fishing line without harming the egret. We updated them throughout the process.
*
I asked the beach goers who first observed the bird if they could bring down shears or a knife from their condo. “Oh, and see if you can find a long pool net while you’re up there, too, please!”
*
Working together, we were able to safely capture the bird and remove the line and sinker without causing too much stress on this beautiful animal. At the last second before the release, we also found and dislodged the hook, which was buried under its wing!
*
In an apparent sign of gratitude, it stuck around for a minute and literally shook it off. So cool!
*

The buffet was open less than 2 miles offshore between #keybiscayne and #foweylight today.
*
Aboard a 22’ open fisherman, @matirionda and his pals were fortunate to witness this epic #wildlife encounter. At first they thought it may have been marine debris, or an abandoned Cuban raft. But as they approached, they discovered several species of sharks, including a few big Tigers, feasting on a (Sperm?) whale in less than 10’ of water. Wow!!
