Activate Your Own FAB Station

Choose a location:

The FAB station should be placed by a path that folks can use to enter and exit the beach, trail, park, etc.
The FAB Station should be placed within 5’ to 10’ of a receptacle(s) where trash can be responsibly discarded or collected for removal.

Fill A Bag will provide:

FillABag Station
Four Buckets / Station
50 FillABag Stickers
Social media shout outs
Unlimited phone, text, email support / guidance
Access to logo to promote events, create merchandise, etc

Champion will provide:

Trash receptacle
Trash removal
Bucket replacements
Maintainance

Ms. Moore and the Key Biscayne K-8 Center middle schoolers showed their love for the environment over two days this week. Together they removed 178 lbs. of litter from the Village streets, sidewalks, parks, bus shelters, parking lots and swales.

This spirited crew of 75 teens and a few hero teachers uncovered some strange finds…as well as a few treasures. Most importantly, none of the litter recovered will end up in the waterways that surround their island paradise. Great job gang. The future is bright!

Today we spotted an immature Reddish Egret in distress, pecking at a fishing line and sinker dangling from its wing.
*
I immediately reached out to @seabirdstation to report an animal in distress and seek their guidance.
*
On standby, they waited for further information from us, but based on the situation and previous encounters we’ve had, we felt confident we could safely capture the bird and remove the fishing line without harming the egret. We updated them throughout the process.
*
I asked the beach goers who first observed the bird if they could bring down shears or a knife from their condo. “Oh, and see if you can find a long pool net while you’re up there, too, please!”
*
Working together, we were able to safely capture the bird and remove the line and sinker without causing too much stress on this beautiful animal. At the last second before the release, we also found and dislodged the hook, which was buried under its wing!
*
In an apparent sign of gratitude, it stuck around for a minute and literally shook it off. So cool!
*

The buffet was open less than 2 miles offshore between #keybiscayne and #foweylight today.
*
Aboard a 22’ open fisherman, @matirionda and his pals were fortunate to witness this epic #wildlife encounter. At first they thought it may have been marine debris, or an abandoned Cuban raft. But as they approached, they discovered several species of sharks, including a few big Tigers, feasting on a (Sperm?) whale in less than 10’ of water. Wow!!

This occurred 06/20/22 but I was reluctant to post it. Honestly it’s strange to receive praise or backlash for something that should be done regardless… if you see an animal in distress please help it. I share this now because the day before yesterday 09/24/22 I came across an even younger turtle in the same scenario. This one was bound by its neck to a hooked nylon line. Unfortunately I wasn’t there in time… 😔

I was driving the boat in idle and all of a sudden my handle got snagged… I stopped the engine immediately to get a closer look and seconds later I noticed splashing at the end of it. I jumped in with my goggles and to my surprise there was a sea turtle wrapped in a fixed line. We decided to help an animal in distress. I was able to untangle the wakeboard rope from the anchored line and cut it loose but the remainder was tightly wrapped around its neck and arms. We safely and slowly brought the turtle to the platform in order to carefully remove the binds. I was amazed how calm the turtle was throughout the process… it must have known we were there to help.

If you’ve ever done a beach clean up in Florida, you’ve probably picked up one of these plastic yellow vinegar tubes, which make their way up the Gulfstream from islands in the Caribbean. REPOST @browardcturtles This poor little guy was found trapped in plastic within in an egg chamber when one of our surveyors was performing an excavation (removal of all nest contents for inventorying to determine hatch success).

Unfortunately, finding plastics and other forms of debris is all too common in nests, as debris litters our beaches and accumulates within the sand.

This is a bittersweet reminder that what we do does effect the wildlife around us quite extensively, BUT, the best part is that WE have the power to create change and keep the world that we live in shining bright.

Cutting down on single use plastics, using reusable items, composting, recycling, etc., are all fantastic ways to help the wildlife around us, as well as ourselves!
